Choosing Your Electrical Site

Why Do I lose Power while Camping?

Alberta Parks campsites have different power options (15-amp, 20-amp, and 30-amp in the power serviced campsites.

Do not use adapters to draw power from a lower amp outlet for an RV that requires a higher amp plug. For example, do not attempt to draw power from a 15-amp outlet for an RV with a 30-amp plug. Powered sites have a limit to their capacity.

  • Campers lose power, in the majority of cases, when too much electricity is being used at once.  Just like at home, when a circuit overloads a circuit breaker will immediately shut off to prevent an electrical fire.
  • Plan to only use one or two electrical appliances at the same time, particularly during extremely hot days when many visitors are using air conditioning.  Running the RV air conditioning full timewill reduce the amount of electricity that can be used for other things.
  • If the circuit breaker shuts off, reduce the number of electrical appliances in use before you reset it.  For example, it is not possible to have air conditioning running continuously during hot days, and also use a microwave, water pump or television.
  • To prevent a circuit breaker from shutting off, prioritize what and when electrical appliances are in use.
  • Have a back-up plan in case you do lose power, to ensure you can cook, stay cool and enjoy your camping experience. NOTE: This is the responsibility of the camper/ guest and not Elevated Experience Camping.
  • Conserving electricity, and timing when you use your electricity in a campsite will ensure you can stay powered. NOTE: 15-Amp campsites do not support the use of air conditioners.

A circuit breaker is an electrical switch that is designed to protect an electrical circuit from an overloaded or short circuit. The basic function of a circuit breaker is to interrupt the electrical flow after if the circuit is overloaded.

Below is a list of common camping items that draw electricity in your trailer, recreational vehicle or motorhome. If a combination of these run at the same time, your electrical circuit breaker will interrupt the flow of electricity, in order to protect your electrical equipment.
Upon arrival at your campsite, you typically plug in devices such as your fridge and or your water heater. Next you may turn on your air conditioning. Combined with other electrical items such as a microwave, stereo, lights or similar electronics, this can easily push your draw close to or over 30 amps. Over 30 amps, the circuit breaker will function to turn off the circuit, and you will need to reset the breaker to use your electricity again.

We recommend adding electrical items gradually, to avoid overloading the circuit since many devices initially draw more electricity to start, thus allowing you to avoid tripping the breaker.
